My AC Needs Refrigerant Again. Is That Normal?

No. Refrigerant does not get used up. A system that needs a pound every spring has a leak, and topping it off every year is a leak someone is choosing not to fix. A leak has a location; ask where it is and what the repair costs.

Call or text (385) 292-7511 any time. Paige picks up around the clock and books your visit on the spot.

    Why It Matters More Now

R-410A is being phased down under the EPA AIM Act, so the refrigerant itself is getting pricey. Paying for it every season is the expensive option.

    What You Can Observe

Ice on the indoor coil or the copper lines. Ice means the coil got too cold, from low airflow (dirty filter, closed vents, weak blower, dirty coil) or low refrigerant from a leak. In practice it comes down to one of those two.

If it ices, turn cooling off and set the fan to ON to thaw it, replace the filter, open closed vents. Never scrape the ice. If it cools normally afterward and never refreezes, it was airflow. If it refreezes within a day or two with a clean filter, that points at a leak.

Warm air at the vents while the outdoor unit runs, with a clean filter and a spinning outdoor fan, is the other sign.

What the Technician Should Verify, Not Assume

Refrigerant charge is read from two numbers, subcool and superheat, measured against the manufacturer's chart for the outdoor conditions, not guessed from pressure alone. A low charge with normal airflow says leak. Then the job is a leak search and repair, and a correct recharge, in that order.

The Sentence to Be Skeptical Of

"It's low, I'll top it off, you'll probably need this every year." That describes a leak they are not fixing. If they cannot tell you where the leak is, get a second opinion before you pay for refrigerant again.

AC Troubleshooting in Utah Valley: common questions

Does an AC use up refrigerant over time?+

No. It is a sealed system. If it is low, it leaked, and the leak has a location.

Is topping off refrigerant every spring a reasonable fix?+

No. It treats the symptom, it costs more every year as R-410A is phased down, and the leak keeps getting worse.

What should a tech check before adding refrigerant?+

Subcool and superheat against the manufacturer's chart for the conditions that day, plus airflow. Then a leak search.
